Improv Games Lab

Learn improv
by playing.

Improv is Vipassana with teammates: be present, notice your impulses, choose which to act on. Read how each game works, then practice it right here.

01

New Choice

Letting go of your first idea

  • • A scene plays out. At any moment the host calls "New choice!"
  • • The player must replace their last line with a completely different one.
  • • It trains you to hold ideas loosely and trust that another one is always coming.

Scene: "I told you not to feed the dragon after midnight."

    02

    Yes, And

    Accepting and building

    • • Whatever your partner says is true. That's the "yes".
    • • Then add something new that builds on it. That's the "and".
    • • Scenes grow when nobody blocks.
    03

    One Word at a Time

    Group mind

    • • Players tell a story together, one word each.
    • • Nobody controls where it goes, so you listen instead of plan.

Start the story with one word…

    04

    Emotional Rollercoaster

    Feeling it in the body

    • • Deliver the same line or keep a scene going while the emotion changes.
    • • When the emotion switches, commit fully: body, voice and breath.

Say this line out loud: "This is the last pancake on Earth."

    Ready?

The emotion changes every 6 seconds. Commit with your whole body.

    05

    Freeze

    Physical offers

    • • Two players act out a scene. Someone yells "Freeze!" and the players stop mid-pose.
    • • A new player taps one out, takes their exact position and starts a brand-new scene justified by that pose.

    06

    Status Swap

    Status and relationship

    • • Play a scene where one character has high status and one has low status.
    • • Halfway through, swap. How does the power shift show up in posture, eye contact and pace?

    Draw a prompt

    07

    Gift Giving

    Specificity and generosity

    • • One player hands the other an invisible gift without saying what it is.
    • • The receiver names it and reacts, then the giver explains why they chose it.
